AI Assist

The Challenge

Conceived to enhance Pulumi users’ search, the “AI Assist” project expanded to include an advanced search bar featuring human-generated searches.

User Testing

The iterative research process advanced quickly, incorporating A/B user testing with diverse designs. A challenge emerged: users wanted the ability to seamlessly switch between syntax and AI search while retaining their ongoing search. This required us to design and develop a mechanism for users to pose a question, convert it into a syntax query, view and edit that query, and easily switch back and forth.

The Solution

We implemented search chips (e.g., “show me resources in productions,” “all my VPCs”) to familiarize users with the search functionality. Upon selecting a chip, the natural language query appears in the search bar. Additionally, we introduced an “I’m Feeling Lucky” chip as a playful method to boost user engagement. Choosing this chip results in a random search selected from a list of pre-determined queries.

The overall design, like all application and product work, remains an ongoing effort. However, the current outcome has proven successful and beneficial for our users.

  • 2023 - present

In late 2022, the Pulumi UX team, in collaboration with the Pulumi Cloud Engineering team, launched the 'Resource Search' project. This initiative aimed to enhance user resource location and issue troubleshooting in the Pulumi Cloud app. As the sole product designer, I oversaw the entire user experience from conception to the official April 2023 launch.
