Pulumi Copilot – AI Chat Interface

My Role

For this project, my role was that of a UI designer, coming into the project after the initial UX research had been completed and a UI had already been developed by the engineering team. My first task was to update the overall UI design—not to change the existing look drastically, but to make it more aesthetically pleasing and to incorporate my knowledge of UX into the design. I began by conducting competitor research, comparing other chat UIs, and studying best practices for chat interfaces. This led to the creation of a first draft of a new, improved UI.

After presenting this first draft to the team, I started meeting with them regularly, working very closely with the project managers, lead engineer, and front-end engineer to ensure that all the requirements for the chat interface were met. Along the way, I created new chat components to add to our design system.

All the designs… and there were A LOT!

During the rounds of meetings, various designs and chat components were discussed and developed, including chat messages, message prompts, code windows, and menu elements. At one point, we even considered changing the logo. My initial logo choice, which we ultimately went with, was a chat icon using Pulumi’s gradient colors. However, there was some discussion about possibly changing this, so I created five different logo options as well. Click the links below to view designs. (FYI -links are Figma files.)

Outcome

This was a really fun project for me! I loved the opportunity to focus solely on design—this is where my heart is truly happy. In the process, I began developing a whole new design system for Pulumi Copilot. We decided that while we wanted the chat interface to blend with Pulumi Cloud, we also wanted it to stand apart. To achieve this, we made specific choices regarding button colors and other components.
